    Re: Sextant manufacturers

    Michael,

When I posted this list, I forgot that
Smithsonian institution has a large list
of manufacturers on its web site.
This was brought to our attention by one list
    member:
    http://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/navigation/maker.cfm?makerid=1
(Which I found accidentally. His message did not reach me,
    by e-mail,
and from the list interface I cannot determine this member's
name). But anyway, the size of this Smithsonian list
indicates that making a complete list of manufacturers
    is probably a hopeless enterprize.

    > Some historians have written articles on these makers

Yes, sure. I know one about Troughton family, and
there is no doubt there is more.
Unfortunately most of these history books and papers
    are not available to me.

    > Would you consider putting the list on
    > Wikipedia so others could add and

I prefer not to do this myself, but my list is
in public domain and I claim no rights on it.
So anyone is free to copy this list or any
part of it, even without acknowledgement:-)
And to put it to Wikipedia or anywhere else.

But recommend to consult the Smithsonian list first,
it is much larger than my list.

    Alex.

P.S. I also consider myself as a "would be collector",
and even have some (modest) money for this hobby,
my main problem is where to get the things from:-)
Interesting things became extremally rare on e-bay.
I follow e-bay for about 4 years. There used to be much
    more sextants few years ago.
(I conjecture that the limited supply is exhausted,
and most of the interesting things are already in the hands
of collectors or shops oriented on VERY rich clients:-(

    Alex.
