Good day Peter.
I believe your sextant is a 'Kingston' by Cooke of Hull.
I have had one since 1966, and it came with two Horizon shades as standard and, even when used together they were not really adequate for a really bright, glaring horizon.
Another hiccup on glare attenuation, was that the original darkened end piece provided for doing Sun above Sun, fitted to the eyepiece of the X-4 'scope...this too was never quite dark enough for its given role.
It is my understanding that the same two horizon shades were standard all through the production years...one shade was yellow tint and the other was a blue tint.....so it should be evident if a shade had been changed in an attempt to enhance the dimming of the direct image.
