thankyou for your (and Alexandre's) help so far. please ignore my earlier post today about shades. i attach 2 photos hopefully showing the problem. i have detached the telescope to try and make the iphone photo clearer to see. photo 1: showing 2 sun images - this is with clamp/micrometer set to "zero". also, if i point the sextant, minus shades, at the horizon, (again with zero settings on the micrometer), the distant hills (about 10 miles away) are spot on - ie: no side or index error needed to focus on a distant tower. Photo 2: if i firstly look at the sun, adjust the side/index screws so i place one sun image directly over the other (ie: not side by side), and then remove the shades and focus on teh same distant horizon, i get the same side/index error i got in photo 1. again, micrometer/arc set to zero.
not sure what is going on?
