I don't see the need to spell GPS out. Or Radar, or Loran, or... Works just fine for me as is. Not clear that we can discuss navigation these days without comparing the strengths and weaknesses of all available systems, past, present and future, so GPS, Radar etc. are bound to creep in on occasion, and IMHO the present spirit allows for that, so is just fine. By default, some of these recent technologies have to be discussed so the serious navigator can be aware of their capabilities, minus the hype--and they obviously have some shortcomings. As there are lists devoted to GPS, folks that want to discuss it at length or engage in the finer points of that system will be better served there anyway.
