Fred, I would suggest emailing the surviving Plath to ask them what glue is used and what solvent is appropriate for it, rather than experimenting. Or a repair house, R. White out of Boston may be willing to discuss this with you, they are very generous with sharing their wisdom rather than making UPS rich. They may say to simply replace the enter thing, or they may have replacements at a reasonable price. If two of your filters have simply fallen out--intact--then the glue should be something less than epoxy. (How did they fall without shattering?) I think using mounting rings would add bulk (thickness), weight, cost, and mechanical problems, as they corrosion-welded themselves into place in salt air, and people bent the frames out of shape trying to unscrew them. Or, they'd require a trip to a special repair shop.
