Since everyone seems to be talking about what sextant
they have, not to be left out, I thought I would talk
about mine.

I have the "Freiberger Drum Sextant" with the traditional mirror
a few years back. I forgot exactly what I paid for it, but it now
listed in the Celestaire Cat. for about $ 950.

I really haven't used it that much, being kind of landlocked most
of the time. Given it to do all over again, I think I would go for
the Astra IIIB for about $420 to $460 depending on the regular or
deluxe version.

My uncle has a boat down at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi and has sailed
down to Mexico across the Gulf using an Astra IIIB with no GPS at
the time. Got there just fine.

As for the plastic sextants. I have a Davis MK 3 and I've seen the
MK 15 and MK 25. They are OK I guess, as they do work, but let's get real.
Plastic sextants are just junk when stacked up to a traditional metal
one. ( I am not saying this to put anyone that has one down, I used
the MK 3 for about 15 years, couldn't afford anything else )
