Hurray, hurray! The sun came out today. I took a Sun sight v a neighbourhood roof ridge with the front of the 2.5x star telescope of my Hughe’s Mate’s 6” three Circle in back to front.  Even with the object lens in place, you can mange something, but it’s a funny old Sun.  However, it’s enough to persuade anyone who’s never looked through a sextant before that it’s what your supposed to see and that marine navigators must be magicians if they can make sense of it.  They would have got a much better sight with the plain sighting tube which should also be present in most sextant boxes.  I tried to hold my phone against the eyepiece to take a photograph, but I didn’t have enough hands.  DaveP
