Two movies have featured the Treworgy Planetarium at Mystic Seaport Museum. The small, but important hit film Mystic Pizza introduced Julia Roberts to the world 35 years ago, and it also included a character who worked at the local planetarium. In one the images below, we see her descending the stairs of the, then, Seaport Planetarium. This year a very small Hallmark holiday production tried to re-kindle some of the success of Mystic Pizza. It's called Mystic Christmas. You can find it online and watch it... if you dare. It's not good, not good at all... unless you like your candy canes dipped in honey and slathered with frosting. Last summer they decorated the entrance of the Treworgy Planetarium to simulate winter and Christmas. It's an homage to Mystic Pizza, of course. The screen cap I'm including here shows the entrance to the Treworgy Planetarium from Mystic Christmas and features the nice hand-carved signage added above the door when it was renamed in Donald L. Treworgy's honor in 2009 shortly before he died. It has his smiling face on the left and also a finely constructed and relatively accurate model of a sextant, hand-crafted in wood and decorated in gold leaf. It's a beautiful thing.
