The Vernier looks fine to me, and the part of the main arc that's
shown in the picture looks reasonable. I don't think you can expect to
get anything much better than that. There are slight defect marks but
nothing that upsets the pattern of the two sets of divisions where
they meet. If the rest of the arc is as good then it's worth going
for.

Yes, I had that instrument overnight. Luckily, we chose to stay in a
nearby hotel for the night rather than driving straight back to
Oxford.

I don't recall all the details and no longer have the photos but it
doesn't look quite the same. As I remember, that one was graduated to
10 seconds on the Vernier, like my present sextant, rather than to
0.2', as is the one for sale. I don't regard that slight difference in
resolution as at all significant. Indeed, graduation to decimal parts
of a minute fits in better with current ways of working and reading
the almanac than does a reading in seconds, to tens.
