John,
Attached are photos of a simplified shadow catcher observation using a white board, carpenter level, and caliper. The height of the level is 2.275 inches. The cast shadow plus penumbra measures 2.450 inches. The inverse tangent works out to an Hs of 42°52.7' which corrects to an Ho of 43°7.7' for the Sun's lower limb. The time of the sight is 18 14 04 UTC (10 14 04 LMT). Location is Latitude 34°10' N Longitude 119°14' W. Hc by Palm PDA application is 42°46.8' for an intercept of 20.9 Toward. Because of the small scale and penumbra length estimation accuracies better than a semi diameter of the Sun shouldn't be expected.
