Brian,
In his reply to you John Clements is describing some elements of the Van Allen solution to the two-body fix problem by direct computation in 3D space (no plotting).
James A. Van Allen: "An Analytical Solution of the Two Star Sight Problem of Celestial Navigation", Navigation: Journal of the Institute of Navigation, Vol. 28, No. 1, Spring 1981.
Check out the attached excerpt from the Navigation Spreadsheets manual and the spreadsheet lops.xls that implements this method.

Frank, many thanks for those references. I am aware that plotting lines of position is the modern method, but I was trying to figure out how to get location simply from doing the math on the numbers, and without doing any plotting. I was sure that this had been solved somewhere along the line and I will dive in to those historical references. If you have any others that you recommend, I am most interested.
