    Perhaps it's just the photo, but the engraved letters looks slightly out of alignment. I would say this is one of those coffee-table knock-offs with 'antiquing' applied. The index scale and micrometer, if there is one, is often a tell-tail sign of a copy rather than an original.

    The background cloth interests me more, however. If it's flat weave carbon tow cloth, the patch we see is likely worth more than a knock-off sextant. This looks to be 4 to 5 oz bi-directional weave, flat tow cloth. This type is unbelievably strong and often used with polyester or epoxy resin in molding.
