After a delay, I should say thanks to Herbert Prinz for his pithy and
instructive answer to Ralph's question.
I would only add that the azimuth formula introduced by George Huxtable in
this thread (tangent/cotangent formula) became the core of renowned
ABC-tables for finding the azimuth from LHA, Lat and Dec ("Time azimuth"
according to some editions of Bowditch.) They emerged at the end of the 19th
century and remain the part of many European navigation table sets up to now.
They never gained such popularity beyond the Atlantic, but they should be
taken as the best azimuth tables ever published.
Of course, Alt+Az inspection tables (HO 214, HO 229 etc.) and digital tools
replaced them step by step, as Herbert Prinz demonstrated.
