I've been studying and practicing CN for about 2 months with a Davis Mark 15, mostly with an artificial horizon in Colorado but have made some sunlights at the Gulf of Mexico.
Most of my sight reductions and UPS plots are consistently at least 10-15 nm off.
I've studied many good YouTube videos but did my reductions and plotting based on Leon Schulz' channel.
I strongly suspect my AH sights have been off at least because I wasn't holding the sextant quite vertical. I think I've resolved timing issues with a phone voice recording app.
I'll be at or near Gaviota Beach this weekend and then at or near Point Vicente Lighthouse at Palos Verdes a couple of days next week.
I'm planning on taking both actual and artificial horizon sun sights for comparison as well as using the NOAA Sun Calculator webpage and the GPS Antispoof Pro app for verification.
I'd appreciate any additional suggestions, and perhaps some local folks might like to join me for mutual aid and sight comparisons.
I just found the group and haven't had time to do much searching of the archives. I'm here from Colorado to see a rocket launch from Vandenberg, take ocean sights, and visit a friend in Torrance.
Best wishes ,
Daniel
