Many or most of my first attempts at AH sights were spent attempting to align the AH image with an index mirror image which was way off to the left, fairly dim and actually reflected off the horizon mirror glass rather than the mirror. I seemed to not understand the sextant wasn't vertical, and thought I was maybe looking in the sight tube cock-eyed or something.
I don't think the idea of a bubble level or something like that to assist with alignment is totally ridiculous for a beginner to wonder about although I'm sure my technique will improve with or without it. Maybe instead I could use a hat with a long bill in front and hang a plumb bob off that to assist with verticality!
