I had assumed you had checked for perpendicularity of the Index mirror and that the cause of being "way to the left", was that your line of sight was otherwise being slewed out of the plane of the sextant body, or perhaps a slewed scope bracket.
I have always had eye cross-dominance, (which worsens things when using an offset prismatic x7 scope) it makes a tricky job of aligning the holding hand so as to see the correct sight picture.
As regards mini bubble levels for instrument verticality during AH obs'n, ....just tilt your wrist a little and you'll see the brought down image whizz off to one side of the image in the AH.....this tells you that your instrument iis off the vertical.
