Hey Daniel,
Having taken hundreds of sites at sea (gps in the early 90's was too expensive for this poor sailor!) I might recommend perfecting your technique without a scope first. Magnification might improve your accuracy (but not really so du on a bumpy sea), but it isn't easier in my experience.
