What a fascinating thread. For kicks, google the 'Texas Magnum', a linear slide rule with 6 digit accuracy. Not sure if the applies to 9 thru 1, but the minimum separation of the lines is easily calculated, if we assume some reasonable line width. (and visual acuity!)
