I agree that the "approximate" solutions for clearing LD's are capable of the same accuracy as the "rigorous" ones IN PRINCIPLE and that these names refer only to the deduction of their formulas and not to their results. Nevertheless, most "approximate" methods and tables (not Chauvenet's method) yielded worse accuracy than rigorous ones in the real life, although this difference wasn't by no means important aboard ship.
