Very interesting. Seems they mainly relied on sextant meridian sights though? No mention of LOPs or time sights. Not sure how accurate their longitude would have been? Running down a radio station bearing without accurate longitude could have given interesting results! On the rock strewn Scillies,if poor visibility, I would use the RDF signal bearing, go about and run away from it!
I've recently had a bit of fun with my old (1980s) Lokata 7 RDF. Can locate my garden with a fix from 2 local airport NDBs. When (if) I go down to the sea again (in my not very tall ship!) I should be able to find Ireland anyway, by running down RTE radio 1 on 252KHz. Sadly the only long wave station I can find. The NDBs from local airports are all short range and as Gary suggests, not much used by aviators and therefore disappearing fast.
