Wow Gary,
That is about the most interesting posting I’ve seen recently, (except for the Chichester Tasman sea thing which remains my “best navlist moment”!) So it looks as if these NDBs will disappear fairly soon since everyone now uses GPS? Where have we heard that story before?
Here in UK, I think the old “Aero beacons” (long range) went slightly after the marine beacons in the early 90’s, since by then everyone had cheap GPS. I think (correct me if I have it wrong) that the “NDBs” here are all short range assists for landing for planes still equipped with ADF. As you say, probably few. So i guess this “fun” Ii am currently having with my old RDF will probably be short lived? I just re-worked my triple bearing fix, corrected for compass variation and got a pretty good cocked hat less than third nm which I find amazing! (probably fluke since I remember much worse results in the 80’s (albeit at sea, not garden) with proper marine beacons. Oh well Still good fun. I still prefer the sun/moon/ sextant to anything, (plus the Bygrave!)
Thanks so much for you great and wise input here.
Francis
