This raises all sorts of interesting issues for potential emergency and/or "hobbyist" use of smartphones as navigation aids. What do you suppose was going on here? Many people DO use their smartphones as GPS devices while crossing oceans, but something went wrong. What could it be? And how can one prepare for something like this, if at all?
