You should definitely book ahead for a hotel, (scan the Internet), but the tourist season is not in full swing yet and I do not anticipate problems in getting accommodation nearby.

Well, HMS Victory is a must-see, of course. It is very well laid out and the info-boards are very good. Then there is the Mary Rose, which sank in front of Henry VIII's astonished gaze (heeled in the wind and the bottom gunports were open...), which I believe is now in a purpose built museum a stones-throw from the Victory and open for viewing. And, a few hundred yards away, HMS Warrior, the ultimate weapon of her day (launched in 1860). So much so that she never fired a shot in anger - never had to! It is fascinating to see the contrasts and the similarities to the Victory, launched around a hundred years earlier, and see how warship design was evolving. There is a lot of other stuff to look at in Portsmouth dockyard to keep you fascinated for a full day.
Anybody else? Things to do in Portsmouth?? Places to stay near there that aren't swamped by tourism?
