    Here's a thought for a new method of CN for space craft traveling at a large percentage of the speed of light.  Suppose that you simply measure the Doppler shift of various stars in different bearings.  That will give you your relative speed toward each, and with a sufficient number of such vectors you could solve for your actual position, velocity, and heading in a reference frame established in a Galactic Almanac previously computed on Earth.
