The sextant is left handed. Designed to be carried in the left hand, and adjusted by the right hand. I wish they all were, because those who write with their right hand (me) don't have to change everything around each time.
Coutiño, first navigator to be flown across the South Atlantic, also had a " left handed" sextant with bubble attachment, and used what is now called the " landfall" technique, also used by Chichester.
I am trying to attach an image of an full size replica of the British Fairey lll biplane used by Coutiño, on the Lisbon waterfront, with the Belem tower in the background. Vasco da Gama is buried close by.
Flying a biplane, handling a sextant, and reducing the sights is difficult, especially if solo. How would I know that?
