You can start with a mid-day three-body fix: Sun (or Moon), Jupiter, and Venus. This is something you may be able to pull off even if you have the misfortune of missing the exact path of totality. The Sun when 99% covered by the Moon, is far less spectacular than a total eclipse, but the sky should be dark enough that you would be able to find Jupiter and Venus in daylight, especially if you start with binoculars. They will be separated by 60° or more in azimuth.
