There are many ways to manage sight reduction...and even many which split the navigational triangle into two right triangles. The one I (think I) understand best is Ageton's method, the equations of which I got from Volume 2 of Bowditch, 1975.
The illustration shows you where Q is graphically. Equation 2 on the worksheet derives that number mathematically.
The distance from point Q to the apex of the triangle is R, which is derived in equation 1.
