I still have one of those from long ago. Davis mk3 lives. I would guess he is using it horizontally to find an angular relationship to a terrestrial target. Course? Position? Range? Distance apart? Distance traveled? A mark 3 is so simple, I found it more accurate than the more sophisticated mark 15 & mark 25. Which seemed to suffer from repeatability issues based on friction and frame wobble. I still have a mark 3 in a hard shell flare case.
