I often use my old Mk3 (horizontally) for piloting around the Scilly Isles. Very accurate. Much more so than using a hand bearing compass. (which would not work on Mars anyway?).Also makes a good pelorus. Birch has a good chapter on this in his "Plastic Sextants" book. If these guys are lost on Mars but have accurate maps, they could probably find their way home with the good old Mk3. All he knows is that it can be used to find out where you are. There he is out on the surface of Mars somewhere (Utah desert) trying to find his way back 'home'. Bless.
