I have found two more copies of Norie on my bookshelf. One was the 1952 edition the other was from 1968. The latter has the usual hard to follow Nories material. The former edition on the other hand  includes the same explanaton as in Brian's 1956 copy. What really impressed me was that when I turned over the page there were three examples, clearly set out with plenty of blank space. This is in stark contrast to the usual dense presentation in typical navigational texts. It seems that in the early 1950s an attempt was made to make at least part of  Norie readable. By 1968 Norie had reverted to the old format. Next time I want to do a haversine calculation I will probably come to this page.

    The examples are:

    (1) Marc St Hilaire

    (2)  Long by Chronometer

    (3) Lat by Ex-meridian

There then follows a discussion of great circle calculations.
