    Dear David,

Modern calculators are not just an electronic embodiments of ancient Log.tables on paper.

Calculators just show you the value you should use in the 10x equation to get the value you took logarithm of. The paper tables give you the always-positive mantissa and use bar-notation to express the negative power of ten.

Try on you fx-82 this: 1 + log(sin(41°)), you will get the 0.81694, and to bring it to Norie's bar-notation - remember you have added a "one", thus you get: bar-1.81694

    For the reference, on fx-82: 2+log(sin(4°)) = 0.84358, thus bar-2.84358

    Hope that helps.

    Warm regards,

    Tony
