Article explaining how time was distributed from the U.S. Naval Observatory through the Western Union telegraph network to subscribers all over the country, such as jewelry stores. The end user would have a special clock synchronized hourly through a Western Union circuit. http://www.metronet.com/~nmcewen/time.html That is one of many interesting articles I found on The Telegraph Office site. There are some on undersea cable telegraphy too. The one about an old salt who worked cable repair is pretty good. Unfortunately he doesn't say how they navigated to the cable faults. He does complain the cables were sometimes well away from their purported locations. http://fohnix.metronet.com/~nmcewen/tel_off.html
