Thanks, Paul---that's a really nice article from 1895.
I guess if you have the luxury of a very long focal length, you can get good sensitivity to stars while simultaneously exposing the Moon. In the 1895 article, they're at the opposite extreme, waiting for bright stars to come along. I guess a long-short exposure is somewhere in between, with the mount needing to provide stability over only a few seconds rather than many minutes.
