That reminds me of when I was a young boy. My grandfather and I were out on his dock and he started pointing to different seagulls and saying things like: "That one there I've named 'Jack'...and that one I call 'Sam'." They all looked the same to me. I asked in wonder how he knew which one was which. He just smiled. For the longest time I believed he had actually named them all. He was a lot of fun.
I'm not implying that your teacher was having a bit of fun in the same way. But then again... :)
