Aubrey - have you looked at http://www.nao.rl.ac.uk/ (Nautical Almanac Office) for their publications offered. Among otheres they offer are Technical Notes about which they suggest: 'These documents are aimed at the more specialised user who requires information on techniques and methods used by the HMNAO for calculating such data as the positions of astronomical bodies and the occurrence of astronomical phenomena.' There is also a Astronomy Information service. They may be able to offer some assistance. The only (vague) suggestion which I can offer is that perhaps some of the publications which you consulted use so-called 'perpepual' formulae which taper off in accuracy with time.
