What an elegant teaching aid - practical and easily made DIY. Similar to those lovely boxed Russian star globes, but stripped to the essence of celestial and viewing coordinate transformations. Every navigator knows their observing latitude and has an Almanac or app for the required star coordinates. Local alt/az's are an easy step after.
All that's needed is a ball, piece of cardboard, marker, protractor and NA kicking around somewhere. Frank's transformer converts little-used hosehold stuff into something educational and useful. And what a nice gift for that navigator on your holiday list - a 3D coordinate transformer.
