John Letcher, in his "Self-Contained Celestial Navigation with H.O.208", from 1977, gives a very simple method for clearing a distance between two stars. From time to time I have thought about how he came up with that solution. After some struggle, I've managed to derive his formula. Perhaps the derivation might be of interest to some NavList readers.
