I don't like verniers in conjunction with a micrometer drum, since I've seen too many sights ruined by reading the wrong end of the vernier as the index. I offer my students a diagram to help them analyze their sight plots, and if a measurement is nine minutes above where it should be, that's due to reading the wrong end of the vernier. As noted, readings to 0.1' can be done without a vernier, so why have one? Jim Wilson ____________________________________________________________ All is not lost!
