FWIW: back in the day of wooden yachts,
a friend of mine on a 36 foot motor-sailor experienced a side
strike near his boat. All electronics were fried, including a
marine SSB radio transceiver. At the time the radio was still in
the box sitting on the salon table.
As to Faraday cages: I did an experiment with one of our cell phones. I wrapped it up in heavy aluminum foil, folded all the edges, and placed it in an all metal eyeglass case. My mate then dialed the phone and behold- it rang. I figure if a mobile phone signal can transmit through that set up an EMP would have no trouble at all.

Re Faraday cages: I use ex army aluminium mess tins, very cheaply available in UK. Take watches, smart phone, small GPS no problem.
