I realize this is off topic as pertains to navigation, but I would appreciate it if anybody could point me to a web page that talks about the MPC file format for getting comets into Stellarium.
I am interested in entering a historical comet into Stellarium. I know these things about the comet:
- eccentricity
- perihelion distance
- Inclination
- argument of perihelion
- longitude of ascending node
- Perihelion date
Please check list of historical comets: https://github.com/Stellarium/stellarium/blob/master/data/ssystem_1000comets.ini
Maybe your comet is on the list already.
I found link on a page from the Rochester Institute of Technology that would have, allegedly, explained the MPC file format...but the link was dead.
Please check the appendix D.2 of Stellarium User Guide to get an explanation of the data files format in Stellarium.
With best regards, Alexander
