Frank... it only took 10 minutes to find the error, once I got up the energy to plunge in. Checked that I had written down the formulas correctly, counting parentheses etc., rechecked the data going into the variables, and was about to begin the tedius process of re-doing the calculations themselves. But the last piece of data used in the Clearing section called for LDprecleared. I had used the raw LDobserved.
So, using the right number:
LDcleared by my recalculation 85d 09.3'
Reed Nav calculator 85 09.2'
Sorta feel like the time I successfully landed my first solo in a Piper Cub 26 years ago. A lot of work, total concentration, tension, bumpy ride, and wheels touched down just at the stall horn bleats a bit! And still Alive!
Thanks Frank, and all who have made suggestions. I used to think I knew celestial nav ....one of those '70's era Navy navigators ;) ... but now I am learning so much more. I have now a new appreciation for all those captains and mates and quartermasters on sailing vessels for about 125 years or so who used these same techniques.
Moon's in distance Friday morning, 89d at 1000 EST and clear but cold weather. Goin' huntn'....
Thanks again....
