Newyddion da! It’s St David’s Day. The daffodils are starting to bloom, and my second-hand copy of Schroeder’s Practical Astronomy (Seryddiaeth Ymarferol), as recommended by Geoffrey Kolbe, has arrived from Anybook Ltd. Why the Welsh theme? Well, it’s ex-libris from the University College of North Wales, Bangor, and it’s only seventh-hand. Between being bought in November 1957 for 25 UK shillings (25/-) and today, it’s been borrowed six times; the last time being 21 years ago in February 2000. That averages approximately once per ten years. It’s good to know interest in practical astronomy is booming in North Wales. I was relieved to find the text is in English not Welsh. It looks pretty good. I suspect it’ll jump to the front of my reading on the exercise bike queue before ‘The Light Ages’ and ‘Heavenly Mathematics’ are completely finished. I’m getting a bit bored with the Merry Monks of St Albin’s & Tynemouth. DaveP
