Sub azimuth compass checks

Can anyone give me help on the triple interpolation of pub. 229 for sun azimuth compass checks? I only have a phone app for a compass but the checks are off from 6 to even 20 degrees. What are the commonly made mistakes? I am clearly making some blunders to be so far off. Thanks in advance for your help.
