Hi Gary
Look up the book Maultsby USAF, Colonel Chuck W.. Toward The Unknown: Memoirs of an American Fighter Pilot . BookBaby. Kindle Edition.
There would be moments, adventures, disasters, challenges, and growth of skill to where Chuck Maultsby would be considered one of the finest and most skilled pilots from among the best in the world. He would know a moment in October of 1962 when his friend and neighbor, Major Rudolf Anderson, was being shot down over Cuba. …And Maultsby? High over the Soviet Union in a black spy plane, the famous U-2, penetrating deep into Russian airspace on his mission… which enraged President John F. Kennedy who, forgetting that Maultsby was an Air Force pilot flying for the Air Force, and his country, was following orders, and remarked in his anger that… “There is always some son of a bitch that doesn’t get the word! What the hell is that man doing over Russia when we’re trying to avoid a war?”
He got lost!!!!! Blinded by the Northern Lights - flew deep into Russia in a U2 - whilst Kennedy was fighting the Cuban Missile crisis - ......... haven't read the book to the end, yet, but he lands somewhere up in the Western Aleutians - Adak I think with only vapour in his tanks - he was lucky.
Must bring it back up on kindle and re-read.
