"I don't see any mention of Sumner nor his method in the 1874 Bowditch." Found it again. It's on page 205, very likely the same spot in every edition from 1855 through 1880. Before 1855, this page is mostly blank. Here's what seems to have happened: the publishers decided to insert a section on Sumner, but they didn't want to spend much money or get into much detail on the method. So they modified the plate for that single page inserting the new text in the blank area. You can see if you look closely that it is composed in a slightly different font. The article that this new section is tucked under is about determining latitude on land with an artificial horizon. Obviously there's no connection between the text on Sumner's method and this other article. It was simply the most convenient nearly blank page in the book! -FER 42.0N 87.7W, or 41.4N 72.1W. www.HistoricalAtlas.com/lunars
