There were a number of relatively sophisticated sun compasses developed during WWII. The British Army had the Cole universal sun compass and the US army had the Abrams universal sun compass. Ralph Bagnold developed his sun compass for use in the Libyan Desert by the Long Range Desert Group. I would suggest the expedition used one of these. Given their relative complexity compared to a magnetic compass, I would suggest the author conflated "accuracy" with "complexity". Something that complex must be accurate!
