Worsley makes a similar assertion about King Haakon bay on South Georgia Island. He states that the German map of the island has the entrance to the bay off by 1 nautical mile. Shackleton repeats that assertion as well.
I mark that up to jingoistic behavior and wishful thinking. Not with his equipment, not over that short a period (a few days). However, with a multitude of observations and with mounted, not handheld, equipment, it is possible to determine latitude to better than 1 Nm.
