Back in the 60s and early 70s we would program computers to give a good approximation of a analog process using digitial ( Booleain ) mathamatics. We produced very close results. We could solve calculus equations not by using calculus but by approximating with digitial math.
I think what Bowditch, Dutton, et all are saying is " You can draw a chart that on a small scale - and small scale only - that LOOKS like the martime chart that you are used to. "
The UPS has the same Latitude scale ( NM per inch ) at 10 degrees north and at 50 degrees north. A Mercator chart does not.
