We were just talking about this last Wednesday at an aviation group meeting. One of our group (who was a pioneer in aviation and computer engineering, he just gave a talk at Langley about the early development of the computer and who's son was a Space Shuttle Commander on, I think, four flights) who flew in Catalina's during World War Two said that there was no astrodome (we had been discussing the refraction of the astrodome and the standard correction table for it in the Air Almanac) and that the navigator just took shots through an open hatch, so no problem with dome refraction.

How did the Navigator of the Catalina shoot his astro? Was there an astrodome or did he shoot through those huge blisters on the sides? DaveP
