Since every "Mercator chart" you have ever seen is actually an "approximation" of a Mercator Chart yet they are still labled as "Mercator" charts there is nothing incorrect about also calling the small area plotting sheet, that also "approximates" a Mercator chart, a "Mercator plotting sheet."
I am attaching Edward Wright's original, 1599, table of Meridional parts for the purist who wants to construct a "true" Mercator plotting sheet.
